Digitising the Global Foundations of the Common Law

Prof. Graham Greenleaf (Professor of Law & Information Systems, UNSW Australia; Co-Director, AustLII) and Dr Philip Chung (senior Lecturer, UNSW Australia; Executive Director, AustLII)

Building on the achievements of two ARC LIEF funded projects to develop the Australasian Legal History Libraries, AustLII, in conjunction with other LIIs around the world, is embarking on an ambitious project to extend the reach of these libraries beyond Australia to the whole of the common law world. During this presentation, AustLII will demonstrate a prototype of the Global Foundations of the Common Law Library (to 1900) and will explore possible collaborations with research/academic libraries.

Australian Policy Online

Amanda Lawrence (Research & Strategy Manager, Australian Policy Online)

Australian Policy Online (APO) is a research database and alert service providing free access to full text research reports and papers, statistics and other resources essential for public policy development and implementation in Australia and New Zealand. Amanda will discuss how librarians and researchers can engage with APO to boost the impact and engagement of research at their institutions. She will outline case studies currently underway with Australian universities.

ORCID: Where to from here

Natasha Simons (Senior Data Management Specialist, Australian National Data Service), Vicki Picasso (Senior Librarian, Research Support and Discovery Services, University of Newcastle Library) and Gabby Lamb (Researcher Services Librarian, University of New England).

ORCID is a persistent identifier for researchers that can resolve problems of name ambiguity and ensure scholarly works are correctly and unambiguously attributed to their creator. Use of ORCID has many tangible benefits, for our researchers, research institutions, funding agencies and the nation overall. Natasha will provide an update on the activities of ORCID internationally and the Australian ORCID Consortium. Vicki and Gabby Lamb will outline institutional experiences of ORCID adoption.

Dr Shantala Mohan (Director, Research Strategy and Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Western Sydney University)

As part of the Government’s National Innovation & Science Agenda, the Engagement & Impact Assessment will run as a companion exercise to Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2018. The new exercise aims to incentivise universities to focus on improving their engagement and the translation of research into wider economic, social and other benefits. Shantala will discuss the University’s experience participating in the Engagement & Impact pilot.

Monograph open access publishing models

Roxanne Missingham (University Librarian, Australian National University)

The open access world is focused on journals, gold, green, diamond and a host of other complexities. But what is happening in the monograph world? Two separate streams – open access scholarly monographs and open access textbooks are experiencing different trajectories, with the nature of scholarly objectives and publisher objectives being seen in a myriad of ways. This presentation will look at the scholarly monograph with digital as a new pedagogy, in particular exploring models of academic use in learning and developments in library practice.

The Australian Data Archive as a trusted repository for research data

Dr Steven McEachern (Director, Australian Data Archive)

This presentation will provide an introduction to the Australian Data Archive – its services, data and facilities, and how researchers and librarians can both deposit and access data with the Archive. It will then report on the current project to accredit ADA as a trusted digital repository with the Data Seal of Approval.
